This week we have been learning...

13/03/20

This week we have been learning all about:

 

Spelling - Y3s have been learning words spelt with 'ch'. Y4s have been learning words ending in -cian and -sion.

 

English - This week we have started to learn about and plan our new writing topic: Explanation text on 'What materials does sound travel through. We have looked at the key features of the text, planned our heading and subheadings and started to plan our fist subheading on 'Does sound travel through solids?'

 

Maths - This week we have continued to learn about fractions, specifically learning about tenths. We have looked at different representations of tenths: pictorially, words, fraction and decimal. We have learnt how to order tenths and how to write them correctly as decimals.

 

Please continue to practise your times tables on Times Table Rockstars - weekly homework is being set gradually introducing new times tables each week!.

 

RE -  We are learning about Jewish holy book - The torah.

 

Science - We investigated how sound travels through solid, liquids and gas. This will then link to our writing over the next week in English.

 

PSHE - We have been learning about Zones of Regulation. This focuses on different emotions and reflects on how we might feel in different situations and how others might be feeling as well.

Maths - Ordering tenths on a number line

28/02/20

This week we have been learning all about:

 

Spelling - Y3s have been learning the prefixes super and auto. Y4s have been learning the prefixes anti and inter.

 

English - In our SPaG lessons, we have been looked at compound sentences using coordinating conjunctions (FANBOYS). We have been applying this in our new writing topic this week: Information text on East Hanningfield. We have planned our heading and subheadings and collected research about the local area.

 

Maths - This week we have continued to learn about fractions. We have learnt how to compare fractions and find a fraction of an amount.

Geography - This week we have started out new topic 'Marvellous Maps'! We looked at different types of navigation and designed our own maps.

 

RE -  We are learning about Judaism. We have learnt about the Mezuzah and Shema.

 

Science - We have started out new topic learning about sound. We practically tested different instruments and learnt that sound is created by vibrations.

 

PE - We are starting our new topic of dance. This will continue to be on a Tuesday morning in the hall. Please make sure you have appropriate PE kit for this.

 

PSHE - We have been learning about Zones of Regulation. This focuses on different emotions and reflects on how we might feel in different situations and how others might be feeling as well.

This week we have been learning all about:

 

Spelling - Y3s have been learning the suffixes -ness, -ful, -less and -ly. Y4s have been learning National Curriculum Spellings

 

English - In our SPaG lessons, we have been looking at different was we can start a sentence, using: fronted adverbials, similes, 'ed' clause and 'ing' clause. We have been applying this in our writing topic this week: Author report as well as planning and writing our own fantasy stories.

 

Maths - This week we have continued to learn about fractions. We have learnt about representing fractions on a number line and then looking at equivalent fractions in different ways using pictorial representations.

 

Please continue to practise your times tables on Times Table Rockstars - weekly homework is now going to be set.

Also, there is a half term competition between the boys and the girls in Kingfisher Class!

This starts on Friday 14th February and ends Monday 24th February.

 

RE -  We have looked at Jewish dietary laws and what foods are and are not Kosher.

 

Science - We practically investigated the question, 'How quickly do teeth decay?' last week. This week we recorded our results and reflected on whether our predictions were correct or not.

 

PE - We have been learning gymnastics this term. We have looked at different positions and creating routines in small groups. This week we focused on movement between the poses.

 

PSHE - We have been learning about Zones of Regulation. This focuses on different emotions and reflects on how we might feel in different situations and how others might be feeling as well.

This week we have been learning all about:

 

Spelling - National Curriculum Spellings

 

English - In our SPaG lessons, we have been looking at direct speech and how to punctuate it correctly with inverted commas. We have been applying this in our writing topic this week, 'Planning a newspaper report on the coronation of Kings, Peter and Edmund and Queens, Susan and Lucy in the Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe.

 

Maths - This week we have been looking at fractions. We have learning about the numerator and denominator, unit and non-unit fractions and making a whole. Year 4s have gone on to look at fractions greater than one whole and how they can be split into a whole and parts.

 

Please continue to practise your times tables on Times Table Rockstars - weekly homework is now going to be set.

 

RE -  We have looked at the common Jewish symbols and special objects that you would find in a Jewish home.

 

Science - We have practically investigated the question, 'How quickly do teeth decay?'. We have tested this by putting egg shells in different liquids and measuring how long it takes for each to erode. There are some pictures of our experiments on the main class page.


History - We have been learning about famous explorers: Captain James Cook, Sir Francis Drake and Sir Ranulph Fiennes. This week we had a debate about exploring in the past in comparison to exploring in the present.

 

PSHE - We have been learning about Zones of Regulation. This focuses on different emotions and reflects on how we might feel in different situations and how others might be feeling as well.

This week we have been learning all about:

 

Spelling - Year 3s: words with the sound spelt 'ch' as well as 's' and 'ss'.

                Year 4s: homophones: scene/seen, male/mail, bowl/ball

 

English - In our SPaG lessons we have been looking at expanded noun phrases and recognising that they are made up of a determiner, adjective and noun. We have been applying these in our writing topic this week: planning a newspaper report for the coronation of Kings, Peter and Edmund and Queens, Susan and Lucy in the Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe.

 

Maths - This week years 3 and 4 have both been looking at how to measure and calculate the perimeter of shapes and Year 4s have also looked at how to work out the area of shapes.

RE - We have looked at Judaism and stories of Moses: the ten commandments and how they celebrate Shabbat.

 

Science - We have planned an investigation, 'How quickly do teeth decay?' We are going to be testing this by putting egg shells in different liquids and seeing how quickly they erode next week!


History - We have been learning about famous explorers: Captain James Cook, Sir Francis Drake and Sir Ranulph Fiennes.

 

In PSHE we are learning about Zones of Regulation. This focuses on different emotions and reflecting on how we might feel in different situations and how others might be feeling as well.

This week we have been learning all about:

 

Spelling - National Curriculum Spellings

 

English -In our SPaG lesson we looked at dialogue in playscripts and converting it into direct speech. We have also used imperative verbs whilst planning our stage directions. As well as introducing new punctuation - colons and brackets.

 

Maths - This week we have moved onto multiplication and division. Year 3s have been multiplying and dividing by 4. Year 4s have been multiplying and dividing by 9.

RE: We looked at the key elements/sysmbols of a Christian wedding ceremony and found out what they meant.

 

Science: We have looked at natural disasters - flooding, forest fires, extreme snowfall, high winds and how these cause dangers to living things.

W/C 18/11/19

This week we have been learning all about:

 

Spelling - National Curriculum Spellings

 

English -In our SPaG lesson we looked at subject, object and possessive pronouns. We have also finished writing descriptive and persuasive holiday brochure and have edited their work and writing it up using a brochure template.

 

Maths - This week we have moved onto multiplication and division. Year 3s have looked at equal groups. Year 4s have been multiplying and dividing by 10 and 100. 

Please continue to practise column addition and subtraction with exchange.Year 3s: 3 digit numbers and Year 4s: 4 digit numbers.

 

History: Look at how what impact the Bronze Age had on Britain and what were the key changes from Stone to Bronze Age. 

We also went to Hadleigh Park on Wednesday for our school trip. The children got to experience what life was like living in an Iron Age round house. Then they were archeologists finding different artifacts and made their own clay pots. Finally, they learnt all about Iron Age Celtic Warriors and attended warrior school; learning how to throw a sling and fight with a sword and shield.


PE - This week we focused on dodging and tagging. Please can you make sure your child has a warm PE jumper and jogging bottoms as we are still doing PE outside.

 

We have started to practise our Christmas Carol service. So please carry on learning your lines!

This week we have been learning all about:

 

Spelling - Year 3s have been learning Prefixes mis- and re-  and Year 4s have been learning the word ending -ure.

 

English -In our SPaG lesson we looked at imperative verbs. We have also continued to write descriptive and persuasive paragraphs for our different holiday brochure sub-headings.

 

Maths - Subtracting with exchange, estimating and checking our answers by using the inverse operation.

 

Science: This week we looked a different food chains and writing some of our own.

 

History: Comparing Stone Age life to life today.

 

RE - Christian church services: communion, confirmation, weddings and funerals.

 

PE - This term we are learning tag rugby. Please can you make sure children have appropriate foot wear and a jumper.

This week we have been learning all about:

 

Spelling - Revision of common misspelt words

 

English - co-ordinating conjunctions and looked a new persuasive text: holiday brochures! Over the next couple of weeks we will be writing our own holiday brochure for a holiday in the Stone Age.

 

Maths - Subtracting with exchange

 

Science: Our new topic is 'Dangers to Living Things'. We started by looking at food webs and learning they key vocabulary.

 

History: Comparing Stone Age life to life today.

 

RE - Christian church services: communion, confirmation, weddings and funerals.

 

PE - This term we are learning tag rugby. Please can you make sure children have appropriate foot wear and a jumper.

Welcome to Kingfisher Class!

 

Welcome back to school Kingfishers! Although it sounds like we have all had a wonderful summer holiday, it is very exciting to be back!

 

This week we have all settled in very quickly and got on brilliantly with our learning! This week we have been learning about:

- how to plan and write a recount

- including time adverbs and 'because' in our writing.

- reading Roman numerals up to 100

 

Our main topic this term in History is 'Prehistory' (Stone Age - Iron Age). We will be looking at how people lived during this time period and will be linking this topic to our learning in English.

In Maths we will be covering place value, addition and subtraction and multiplication and division.

Kingfishers have PE every Tuesday afternoon. This term they are learning key hockey and tag rugby skills. We will be outside so please make sure you have trainers and a PE jumper.
